                                                                 GOLDEN  BRIDGE

Gayon Gaon SHG

The gap between Majuli and the rest of the world is the mighty river Brahmaputra.

Majuli , the largest river island in the world is just 20 KM away from the District HQ of Jorhat District. A proposal is on the card for declaring Majuli as a world heritage site.

Flood is the source of tears. It visits and revisits in every monsoon ravages dwelling houses, standing crops, roads -- what ever comes on its way. But the weeping eyes smile after the flood when people make heavy harvest of Rabi crops sowing on flood hit fertile earth . Apart from primary sector occupation, scope for other avenue is almost non -existent.

Majuli is so near to Jorhat but so far and un - approachable as the mighty Brahmaputra cuts the bosom.

Here some youths of Gayon Gaon under Ujani Majuli Dev. Block, crippled by disguised unemployment in primary sector formed one SHG on 1-9-1999 and opened an account at Sibsagar District Central Co-operative Bank. Thrift and frugality, transparent transaction, timely repayment of loan and advances, well co-ordination among members inter-se and self discipline were the keys features of the group. DRDA Jorhat advanced revolving fund of Rs. 10,000/-. In due course of time the aforesaid bank sanctioned Rs. 3.25 lakhs for a machine boat for ferrying passenger and goods. DRDA, Jorhat released Rs. 1.25 lakh as subsidy.

From June, 2002, the group started regular ferry service from Majuli to Neemati ghat across the mighty Brahmaputra. Every day, they earn Rs. 3000/- on an average.  The group repaid the loan. The effort of DRDA brought colour. The group members have through their sincere and dedicated endeavor elevated themselves. YES, the ferry has built a golden bridge across the mighty Brahmaputra.

FRUIT  PRESERVATION

BRINDABAN SHG

During the Summer season when the scorching Sun eats up the human fluid, a glass of cold squash turns to be the most cherished and sought after drink for quenching the thirst If it is a citrus fruit like Wood apple, Pine apple, Sweet Lemon, Crambula, Oranges ,etc., and the squashes are prepared with little of preservatives and chemicals , who will not like a sip ?

Fruits and Vegetables grow in abundance in Jorhat District but as the infrastructure for preservation is non-existent, the farmers are made to yield to the nefarious design of the intermediaries.  DRDA Jorhat  identified the potentialities of a big market of squash ,jam jelly, pickles etc. prepared from orange lemon , carambula,, wood apple, litchis, jack fruits, pine apple, guavas etc.

The DRDA Jorhat set –up one infrastructure for preparation and packaging afore said items under SGSY 2001-02 at BORBHETA under BAGH CHUNG Dev. Block at a cost of Rs. 7.00 lakhs. Modern plant and equipments were provided. 20 nos. of women folk under the name and style of BRINDABAN SHG. have been working in the production. DRDA Jordhat gave revolving fund of Rs. 10,000/- and SBI Kotoki Pukhuri granted loan of Rs. 3,00,000/- with a DRDA subsidy of Rs. 1,25,000/- IN 2003-04 . The group has already repaid Rs. 85,000/- till now.  An organization namely MEGHA FOOD PRODUCTS  has been providing  technical back-up  and forward linkages. Meghali food products is a popular brand name in Assam.

This is the only SHG in the State to obtain a FPO license and perhaps among few in the country.

Recently the SHG secured an order for supplying consignment to other state also.

At present each member of the group earn Rs. 1200  per month.Major portion of the sale proceed is reinvested .  More over, they are imparting training to local women folks of remote areas to prepare pulps from the fruits beside preliminary works for preparation of Pickles which serve as basic row materials for feeding the plant. This helps the women of remote areas to earn some money on regular basis with an assured clientele. Thus a catena of activities has been created.

ALOK SANDHANI SHG

VILL: BARKHAT
GP: MELENG BALICHAPORI

GOD helps them who help themselves. This proverb has come true at vill. BARKHAT under Meleng Balichapori GP. Here 12 youths, 3 bachelor degree holders and other 9 HSS passed formed a SHG on 25th September 2002 with a strong determination to stand upon their own feet. They were immune from subsidy/ revolving fund syndrome.

They ventured down to start paddy(LUIT variety) cultivation over a plot of 5 bighas of fallow land and harvested 18 qtls. of rice. Their maiden venture fetched Rs. 8500.00. They also renovated an ancient royal tank , about 5 bighas in area and started Composite Pisciculture, Duckery and Poultry. The moving fishes creating waves around, 106 nos of swimming SERACHAMELI ducks and 200 nos of GIRIRAJ poultry heads reflects the efforts of the members. The most praiseworthy venture they have taken up is- they own distinction of starting the first Vermicompost Manufacturing Unit of Jorhat District.

Their sincerity is reciprocated by local officers of Veterinary and Agriculture deptt. officers. Dr. D Rajkhowa, scientist from AAU has also extended his service in the Vermicompost Unit. This group has gone through the gradation test. DRDA Jorhat is keen to provide all out assistance to such a group.
